FAQ – about turf

What is TURF?

TURF – The Urban Food Factory is a project that transforms underutilized urban spaces, like parking garages, into sustainable food production hubs. Using modular farming systems, aquaponics, and biochar production, TURF enhances local food resilience, reduces waste, and promotes circular economy solutions.

Is TURF a commercial product or a research project?

TURF is an innovation-driven research project exploring how urban infrastructure can support local food resilience. It is developed in collaboration with sustainability experts, designers, and urban planners to create scalable, real-world solutions.

Who can participate in TURF?

Anyone with access to an underused urban space—such as a parking garage, warehouse, or similar structure—can explore TURF’s potential. The project is designed for city planners, business owners, property managers, and sustainability advocates looking to integrate urban farming into their communities.

FAQ – how does it work?

How does TURF work?

TURF utilizes repurposed spaces and equips them with smart, modular farming units that can grow leafy greens, raise fish, or produce biochar. The system optimizes space, water, and energy use to create a self-sustaining urban farming model. Our digital tool helps users assess the viability of their garage and simulate potential outcomes.

How do I assess my garage’s suitability for urban farming?

Our digital TURF Tool guides you through an infrastructure checklist, evaluating factors like water access, ventilation, and electricity. Based on your input, it provides a viability score and suggests potential improvements.

What happens after I assess my space?

Once your garage is evaluated, the tool simulates different farming models and calculates potential yields, costs, and business opportunities. It also suggests local stakeholders—such as restaurants, schools, or urban markets—that might be interested in partnering with you.

What are the benefits of urban farming in garages?

  • Increases local food production and reduces dependency on global supply chains.
  • Optimizes unused urban spaces, contributing to sustainability.
  • Supports circular economy models, using biochar to improve soil quality.
  • Creates economic opportunities by connecting growers with local businesses and restaurants.
  • Improves urban resilience by reducing food transport emissions and water waste.

What can I grow with TURF?

TURF offers different farming models based on space and needs:

  • Leafy greens (e.g., lettuce, spinach, herbs) for local markets and restaurants.
  • Fish & greens using aquaponics for a balanced, self-sustaining system.
  • Biochar production, turning organic waste into carbon-rich material to improve soil health.
  • Community farming hubs, transforming garages into public learning and engagement spaces.
